Update on City of San Antonio, Bexar County Storm Response

According to the National Weather Service, Tropical Storm Harvey began moving slowly back to the southeast and was centered near Cuero this morning. Harvey will continue southeast and emerge just offshore of the mid-Texas coast Monday night. Harvey is then forecast to make a loop and come back onshore into Southeast Texas Tuesday into Wednesday as a Tropical Storm. Some drier air has worked into the southwest and west side of Harvey, and when combined with the more easterly track, slightly lower rainfall amounts are anticipated across the I-35 corridor near San Antonio. Heavy rainfall in bands on the north and east side of Harvey could still produce life-threatening Flash Flooding, with the greatest threat east of I-35 and I-37. Occasional wind gusts currently around 30-45 mph in the Tropical Storm Warning counties will gradually decrease across the area later today and tonight.

Evacuations

200 Gembler Road continues to be the reception center for every evacuee, regardless of their mode of transportation.

Donations

Donations can be dropped off at the Food Bank warehouse from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. All City Council District Field Offices will operate as additional drop-off sites for Food Bank donations. Hurricane victims are in need of food, diapers, baby formula, pet supplies, hygiene products and unused clothing. NO used clothing will be accepted under any circumstances. The South Texas Blood and Tissue Center currently has less than one day's supply of blood due to the increase in demand to support affected areas. To become a donor, please call 210-731-5590 or visit southtexasblood.org for more information. 

Volunteers

Anyone interested in volunteering with local relief efforts should contact 311.

The public should call 311 for any questions or updates on City services. Out of town visitors should call 210-207-6000 to reach the 311 Call Center. Residents in unincorporated areas of Bexar County should continue calling 210-335-6000 to report debris in County creekways. 

Street Closures

There are 13 street closures in San Antonio at this time. Residents can check the Emergency Street Closures link on the City's website, sanantonio.gov. Additionally, residents can subscribe to receive low water crossing notifications in their area by visiting www.bexarflood.org.

Transportation & Capital Improvements 

City crews have been working around the clock to address road closures and other issues reported by the community, including clearing 154 trees from the public right-of-way in the last few days. Please continue contacting 311 to report weather-related concerns and requests for service.

San Antonio International Airport

The San Antonio International Airport is experiencing cancellations and delays due to the effects of the closures of Houston’s Hobby and Bush airports. Approximately 32% of arrival flights and approximately 25% of departure flights today have been cancelled. Anyone flying into or out of San Antonio is encouraged to check with airline carrier before heading to the airport. Additionally, search, rescue and medical aircraft are staging out of both San Antonio International and Stinson airports in support of FEMA efforts.

Metropolitan Health Department

Metro Health continues working with its medical reserve corps deployed to medical operations in shelters where it is set up to meet the medical and sanitation needs of the evacuees. Together with the Regional Medical Operations Center, Bexar County Medical Society and area hospitals, Metro Health is also assisting the medical community in relocating medical evacuees.

Solid Waste

Recycling, organics and garbage collection and curbside brush and bulky collection will occur as usual on Monday, Aug. 28. Recycling and organics recycling postponed from Saturday, Aug. 26 will have substitute collection on Wednesday, Aug. 30 along with their regular garbage collection. The following locations will be open on Monday, Aug. 28:

The Bitters Brush Recycling Center (1800 Wurzbach Pkwy., 78216) and Nelson Gardens Brush Recycling Center (8963 Nelson Rd., 78252) will be open for San Antonio residents to dispose of storm-related tree debris for free through Sept. 8 at no charge (CPS Energy bill and ID for proof of residency required).

Residents should utilize the green organics recycling cart for disposal of branches, leaves and other small organic debris that will fit into the cart. Branches should be cut to fit into the cart with the lid closed. Residents without a green organics cart can call 311 and request a cart to be delivered. Residents with trees down on their property from the storm should call 311 to report as soon as possible. Customer service representatives will be able to walk residents through the process of having the debris collected.

Animal Care Services

In addition to 192 evacuated pets received at the emergency shelter, ACS staff also assisted in the rescue of two injured seagulls and a goose from Rockport.

CPS Energy

CPS Energy crews have responded to 215 downed wires and replaced 30 poles. As of 2:30 p.m., there are 36 outages affecting 162 customers. A map of current outages can be viewed here. Residents can report an outage at cpsenergy.com or dial 210-353-HELP (4357) for electrical or gas emergencies. CPS Energy would like to remind drivers to be aware of crews working on city streets as visibility becomes a challenge.

SAWS

Residents can report sewer overflow or water concerns to 210-704-7297. The latest updates can be found at saws.org or on Twitter and Facebook using the handle @mysaws.

SASpeakUp Open House

The Southside budget community night, which was scheduled for this Saturday, has been postponed. The new date is 6-9 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 7 at Pearsall Park. Residents can visit SASpeakUp.com for more information.
